Sharni Campbell from SC People personally raised $9,828.00 for Grow a Star as part of the 2022 Trek for the Stars adventure in Cradle Mountain.
We asked Sharni about experience and her motivation to help others.
Where did you hear about Grow a Star?
I heard about Grow a Star through the work of Michelle Faithfull in the Newcastle community.
What motivated you to become involved in supporting the program?
I grew up in a low socio-economic environment and lived in a Home in Place (formerly Compass Housing) residence, which to me and my family, was a blessing. Throughout my childhood, despite facing financial challenges, I always felt so blessed to have such a fabulous support network around me in my friends, family and friends who became family. This allowed me to also pursue my dreams and passions, despite our challenges.
I recognised the importance for a child, the importance of having someone believe in you. Sometimes it only takes one person to believe in you for you to begin to believe in yourself and I felt compelled to give that hope, opportunity and self-belief to these talented children.
How are your experiences with growing up in social housing, relevant to the young people we support at Grow a Star?
As I mentioned above, I know what is capable when our children believe in themselves and know that they can achieve whatever they put their minds to. On the flip side, I have also seen the unfortunate and destructive path of those who are not given the opportunity and encouragement to pursue their passions and dreams and it is a tragedy for every child who is kept in that cycle.
How would you describe your personal experience with the Trek for the Stars Tasmania adventure and would you recommend something like that to others in the future?
The Tassie trek was an incredible life experience, you’re physically and mentally challenged across the 5 days. The trek helped me to reconnect with nature and myself, outside of my busy life as an entrepreneur. Not only do you get to experience the magic of places like Cradle Mountain, but you share a week with like-minded, kind and compassionate humans.
