Declan’s path to the main stage

With the right support Declan turned his passion for music into purpose and found new inspiration at Young Gums

Declan picked up a guitar at 12, drawn to rock and blues. Since then music has become a lifeline.

Declan first picked up a guitar at age 12, drawn to the sound of classic rock and modern blues. In the years since, music has become more than just a hobby. It has become a lifeline. With quiet determination and a self-taught foundation, he has worked hard to develop his skills, even when the road has not been easy.

“I have had the pleasure of teaching Declan guitar for the last two years at Mount View High School,” said Eddie Garven, Head Tutor at Howling Wolves Studios in Whitebridge. “His dedication and determination have been nothing short of impressive. There have definitely been challenges, but he has shown real perseverance in pushing through.”

When Declan’s tutor shared the flyer for the Young Gums Grow a Star scholarship, something clicked. He saw a chance not just to learn more about music, but to connect with others who share his passion and maybe even step onto a bigger stage.

With support from Home in Place’s Grow a Star initiative, Declan joined the 2025 Young Gums program at Dashville’s Gum Ball festival. Over five days, he immersed himself in all aspects of the music and events world, from technical production and event management to rehearsal sessions with industry mentors and a final performance on the main stage.

His mum Cass said the experience had a big impact.

“He absolutely had a ball and learned so much. I have not seen him this energised in a long time. It has really lit a fire in him.”

That fire was evident throughout the program. Whether it was hands-on workshops, late night jam sessions, or learning about the logistics of live events, Declan threw himself into every opportunity. His willingness to learn and contribute did not go unnoticed by the musicians and mentors on site.

“This opportunity will only help solidify a path he is already well on his way to carving out for himself,” said Mr Garven.

Declan’s story reflects what Grow a Star is all about, creating access to meaningful experiences for young people who may not otherwise get the chance. And for Declan, this is only the beginning.
