Generosity, music, and powerful stories filled the room at Noah’s on the Beach in Newcastle on Friday 12 September, as 120 guests came together for Home in Place’s fifth annual Lunch for the Stars, raising more than $38,000 to support young people through the Grow a Star program.
Guests were captivated by acclaimed singer, author and speaker Clare Bowditch, who spoke candidly about her childhood, the mentors who shaped her journey, and the power of receiving support at the right moment.
Clare’s storytelling, along with two moving acoustic performances, echoed the purpose of Grow a Star - to ensure young people facing challenges are given opportunities, encouragement, and belief to achieve their goals.
The presentation of scholarships is always a special part of Lunch for the Stars and this year was no different.
Scholarships were awarded to Archie Le Quesne and Javad Khalili, helping these young people take the next steps towards their dreams.
Ten-year-old Archie Le Quesne, a determined para-athlete living with cerebral palsy, was awarded the Joan and John McCosker Scholarship.
Archie trains several times a week and competes in athletics and cross country at both state and national levels. The scholarship will help with uniforms, travel, entry fees and training costs as he continues to build his skills and proudly represent as a T35 multi-class athlete.
Kerrie Smith said on behalf of her sisters Robyn O'Brien and Tracey Sneddon:
“Archie was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Joan and John McCosker Scholarship to continue the tradition of supporting someone whose story really inspires us.
We are so impressed by everything Archie has achieved so far and feel privileged to be able to support him to continue his journey in the athletic world in the future.”
Sixteen-year-old Javad Khalili received the AON Scholarship.
Javad’s immediate goal is to finish school and support his family, and the scholarship will provide him with a laptop for his studies as well as the encouragement to pursue his passion for music.
AON’s Jacintha Borg said:
“Each year, we receive incredible submissions — young people with bold and ambitious dreams of becoming athletes, artists, scientists, and so much more. But this year, one submission stood out, not because the dream was grand or extraordinary, but because it was humble. It reminded us of something deeply important. Javad has a deep love for music, but his aspiration wasn’t to become a star.
His dream is selfless and rooted in responsibility. And while we never want this sort of responsibility placed on young shoulders, it’s important to recognise the strength of character it takes when they do.”
Although Javad couldn’t attend, his quiet determination inspired an extraordinary act of generosity when Megan Smith (Prosperity) and Jan Bynon (HIC Services) combined their winning auction bids to gift him a guitar signed by guest speaker Clare Bowditch.
This spontaneous gesture was one of the highlights of the day, and Home in Place will help present the guitar to Javad in the coming weeks.
This event was made possible thanks to the generous support of our partners:
Jan Bynon, Clare Bowditch and Megan Smith
We are also grateful to our many in-kind and Grow a Star program supporters, including:
Since its launch in 2012, Grow a Star has awarded more than 700 scholarships valued at over $460,000, helping young people break through financial and generational barriers to pursue education, sport and the arts.
The $38,000 raised this year means even more young people will have the chance to thrive, backed by a community that believes in them.
