Grow a Star and Young Gums

Two young Grow a Star participants, Johnathan and Declan, recently took a bold step forward in their musical journeys through their involvement in the 2025 Young Gums program at The Gum Ball festival.

Held over the ANZAC Day long weekend in Lower Belford, the five-day Young Gums program gave emerging musicians a unique, behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to bring a major music event to life. Participants took part in a range of workshops, mentoring sessions and practical training, all while immersed in the rhythm and energy of one of the Hunter’s most beloved festivals.

Johnathan and Declan embraced every opportunity – from learning the ins and outs of event logistics and technical production to rehearsing and performing as part of a group on the main stage. They were supported by experienced musicians, artists, and industry professionals who helped build their confidence and broaden their skills.

This year marked the introduction of a Young Gums scholarship through Grow a Star, awarded to Declan. Johnathan, a continuing Grow a Star participant, applied independently and was also selected. Fellow participant Oliver Gream joined the crew as a Young Gums volunteer, further demonstrating the depth of talent and commitment among Grow a Star young people.

We’re proud of what Johnathan, Declan and Oliver achieved during the program and look forward to seeing what they do next. This is just the beginning for these rising stars.
