With support from Grow a Star Johnno is turning his passion into confidence & new opportunities.
Mostly self-taught, his musical journey has been shaped by hours of practice, a few early vocal lessons at Central Coast Music Factory, and a passion for performing whenever the opportunity arises.
This year, with the support of a Grow a Star scholarship, Johnno was one of eleven young people selected to take part in the 2025 Young Gums program at Dashville’s Gum Ball festival.
The program offers an immersive five-day experience that gives young musicians a chance to learn directly from seasoned professionals in the music and events industry.
Johnno embraced the experience from the very start. From hands-on workshops and group rehearsals to production training and artist Q&As, he dove into every part of the program with enthusiasm. He made new connections, took in every bit of advice, and gave it his all during the final group performance on the main stage.
Johnno is also developing as a multi-instrumentalist, currently playing acoustic and electric guitar, bass and yidaki, and exploring how different sounds can shape his songwriting and performance.
“Young Gums was a great experience. I especially liked working with industry professionals. The knowledge they had was invaluable and allowed me to grow my confidence and skills as a musician,” says Johnno.
Johnno’s musical journey has always been a self-driven one. He has performed at community events for Barang Regional Alliance, Eleanor Duncan Aboriginal Services, and Mingaletta Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation. He has also taken the stage at school events and busked at local shopping centres. The Grow a Star scholarship is now helping him take the next step, contributing towards specialised lessons, performance costs and equipment.
“Young Gums mentorship program is such an amazing opportunity for young musicians to engage with like-minded peers as well as professional musicians currently in the industry. I am so thankful my son had this opportunity. It was beautiful to see a usually reserved young man increasingly grow with confidence, not just in his music but also in his connection to his band members – the other Young Gums. The inclusiveness and support given by the Dashville team goes beyond anything we have ever experienced before. Dashville’s Gum Ball is not just a festival, it's a community!” says Johnno’s mum.
“Grow a Star has opened doors that have given Johnno amazing opportunities and connections that have helped foster his musical development and, more importantly, grown his confidence. Without Grow a Star's support, this just wouldn't have been possible, and both Johnno and I are immensely grateful for everything they have done,” she adds.
Michelle Faithfull, Events and Partnerships Manager at Home in Place, said it was powerful to watch Johnno’s confidence grow across the week.
“It was wonderful to see him flourish and make such lovely connections. He really came into his own.”
Earlier this year, Johnno also performed at Sound Check, a Grow a Star music fundraiser held in Newcastle. Sharing the stage with local icons like Magpie Diaries and Melody Pool, he was one of three young Grow a Star musicians to perform on the night.
Johnno’s story is a reminder of what can happen when young people are given the chance to step into their passion. With the right support, talent and hard work, their voices can shine and inspire others along the way.
