Grow a Star is a transformative youth mentoring and scholarship program created and facilitated by Home in Place.
The program supports young people experiencing disadvantage to overcome financial, social and generational barriers that may limit their opportunities. By helping young people pursue their passions, the program builds confidence, strengthens aspirations and fosters positive habits and behaviours that can set them up for life.
Engagement in learning, sport and the arts helps young people connect with their peers and communities. When supported to participate in activities they care about, young people are more likely to experience positive learning, health and future employment outcomes. Yet for many, circumstances outside their control can make it difficult to access these opportunities. Grow a Star helps bridge that gap.
The program also encourages collaboration between other agencies and mentors, welfare organisations, sporting partners, government bodies and corporate contributors to provide motivated young people with the chance to fulfil their potential.
Through these partnerships, Grow a Star is a genuine source of positive change.
We work with young people and their families to enable them to pursue a hobby, a passion or ambition.

These are some examples, the possibilities are numerous!
Grow A Star was launched in New South Wales in 2012 as a program that focused on assisting young people living in Home in Place properties and other social housing, to achieve their sporting dreams and to promote generational change.
By 2014, the program was also supporting young people to pursue their academic, musical and artistic goals and by 2018, the program was open to all disadvantaged youth.
The program was officially launched in New Zealand in 2024.
